Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the February 25, 2023 presidential election, Mr. Peter Obi, has shed light on his inability to conduct local government elections during his six-year tenure as governor of Anambra State, attributing it to ongoing court litigations.

Obi made this disclosure at the LP mega rally held in Benin at the Baptist Convention ground, in anticipation of the September 2 Local Government Council election in Edo State.

While addressing the crowd, Obi acknowledged that despite the absence of local government elections, the funds allocated for local governments were still utilized for their intended purposes, emphasizing transparency in the use of these funds.

“As a governor, I was hindered by legal proceedings and litigations from holding local government elections for over six years. Nevertheless, I want to assure you that the funds allocated to the local government were effectively channeled towards their development. I encourage you to verify this assertion and see if any funds are unaccounted for,” Obi stated.

He underscored the importance of local government institutions as vital components of grassroots development and governance. Obi outlined key areas such as healthcare and education where local governments play a pivotal role, highlighting their significance in addressing poverty and facilitating development.

Obi reiterated the close connection between local governments, state governments, and the central government in achieving holistic development, stating that the local government serves as a conduit for implementing nationwide development initiatives.

The Labour Party’s national chairman, Julius Abure, commended the party’s strong presence during the presidential election and urged supporters to replicate the enthusiasm in the forthcoming local government elections. He emphasized the importance of a fair and credible electoral process.

Prominent governorship aspirant and former Nigerian Bar Association President, Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata, encouraged voters to exercise their rights without fear, reminding them to await the outcome of the results.

The state chairman of the party, Kelly Ogbaloi, expressed gratitude to the presidential candidate for boosting the morale of local government candidates ahead of the elections. He urged party members to ensure the success of their candidates during the polls.
