Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has announced a significant increase in the minimum wage for workers, raising it from ₦40,000 to ₦70,000.

The governor disclosed this during the inauguration of the state-of-the-art Labour House (secretariat complex) for labor unions in Benin City on Monday.

Effective May 1, 2024, the new minimum wage will be implemented, coinciding with this year’s Workers’ Day celebrations.

Previously, Edo State had set its minimum wage at ₦40,000, surpassing the national benchmark of ₦30,000 by ₦10,000.

This marks the second time Governor Obaseki has elevated the minimum wage in the state, having previously increased it from ₦30,000 to ₦40,000 around 2021.
