NLC caretaker c’ttee remains legitimate Edo NLC, says Igbafen

The Edo State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has cautioned the general public to be wary of any unauthorised person or group masquerading as the acting chairman or leadership of the Edo State Council of the NLC.

The NLC insisted that the legitimate leadership of the Edo Council of the NLC is the Prof. Igbafen-led Caretaker Committee, which was legally constituted by the National Central Working Committee (CWC) of the NLC.

In a press statement in Benin City, Edo State, signed by Comrade Prof. Monday Lewis Igbafen, Chairman, Caretaker Committee of the Edo State Council of the NLC, maintained that the clarification had become necessary in order not to allow a continuation of deceit aimed at misinforming and misleading the public about the true position of the leadership of the NLC in the state.

It will be recalled that there have been two factions in Edo state NLC, one led by Igbafen as chairman and recognised by the national body, while the other one headed by Bernard Egwakhide.

According to the statement, the Bernard Egwakhide-led State Administrative Council (SAC) of the NLC in the State had since been dissolved by the CWC, specifically on August 13, 2025, for unethical behaviour, anti-union activities, and gross violations of the Constitution and rules of the congress.

The NLC maintained that the clarification had become necessary in order not to allow a continuation of deceit aimed at misinforming and misleading the public about the true position of the leadership of the NLC in the state.

The statement maintained that, Igbafen is the only legitimate authority empowered to speak on behalf of workers in the state as recognised by the CWC of NLC.

Igbafen urged the general public to disregard any information or press release that does not have the approval of the caretaker committee.

Adding that, the Edo NLC caretaker committee reiterated its commitment to the speedy resolution of the crisis in the Edo NLC and called for the cooperation of all stakeholders.
