Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) has disclosed that it has recorded 241 domain names. The domain names are made up of 98,285 new ones, 71,470 renewals as well as 1,970 restorations.
Mr. Adesola Akinsanya, President of NiRA said this when he led association’s board members to present its 2026 vision to the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) Director-General, Malam Kashifu Inuwa. NiRA also used the opportunity of the visit to present its 2025 Annual Report and 2026 Business Plan to the NITDA D-G.
His words: “Some of our achievements over the past year include 98,285 new registrations, 71,470 renewals, and 1,970 restorations and we have 241,000 active domains. Beyond the numbers, NiRA also implemented important security upgrades, including the Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC).
“This will ensure a more secure and resilient internet experience for local users, as well as improvements in registrar support and engagement. NiRA is intensifying efforts to make .ng and .gov.ng domains the preferred standards nationwide, the NiRA President further stated.
He announced plans to embark on joint awareness campaigns and digital capacity-building initiatives to encourage adoption by state governments, local councils and public institutions.
According to him, the association is also upgrading its internal systems, introducing automation and reviewing its constitution in line with global standards to ensure sustainable growth.
“NiRA is looking into deeper stakeholder engagement and moving into areas where we see massive possibilities. We are specifically targeting startups and aligning with tech events across the country and with stronger collaboration, we can drive widespread adoption across every tier of government,” Akinsanya said.
Responding, Inuwa, while commending NiRA’s 2026 business plan, directed the association to work closely with NITDA’s e-Governance and Digital Economy Department to ensure effective implementation, daily updates and proper tracking of projects under the plan.
“You have my full approval for these initiatives. Let us change our strategy, sync up more closely and ensure everything we have agreed upon during this presentation is fully implemented by next year,” he said.
The two organisations reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration aimed at increasing the adoption of the .ng domain nationwide.
