The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has announced that it will unveil its 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. The event, themed “The Role of Early Warnings towards a Climate Resilient Aviation Industry for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development,” will provide essential climate forecasts for the upcoming year.

A statement released on Monday highlighted that NiMet, in line with its mandate to advise the government and public on weather, climate, and water-related matters, annually publishes climatic patterns—including rainfall and temperature forecasts—during the first quarter of each year.

Prof. Charles Anosike, NiMet’s Director General and CEO, emphasized the importance of the SCP document. He noted that the prediction will address vital weather and climate information that could impact various sectors, including Agriculture, Aviation, Disaster Risk Management, Health, Oil & Gas, Telecommunications, Tourism, Transport, Power, and Water Resources Management.

“The Seasonal Climate Prediction highlights vital Weather and Climate information that may affect socio-economic activities in the following sectors during the year: Agriculture, Aviation, Disaster Risk Management, Health, Oil & Gas, Telecommunication, Tourism, Transport (Water and Land), Power (hydro and renewable), Water Resources Management, etc.,” said Prof. Anosike.

The 2025 SCP will include forecasts such as the onset and cessation dates of the rainy season, the length of the cropping season, expected rainfall totals across all 774 Local Government Areas, temperature projections from January to May, and vigilance forecasts for diseases like malaria and meningitis.

The SCP document is regarded as a national resource, with stakeholders from public and private sectors, development partners, NGOs, the diplomatic community, and farmer associations expected to attend the event. The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN, will perform the official presentation.

Additionally, the event will feature the launch of a summary document for policymakers, translations of the SCP into three major Nigerian languages, and a report on the State of the Climate in Nigeria.
