Nigerian police approve promotion of over 900 officers

    Published on

No fewer than 951 officers of the Nigeria Police Force have been promoted following approval by the Police Service Commission (PSC).

This was contained in an internal police wireless message issued from the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

Hundreds of the officers were promoted from the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).

The document titled “POLICE WIRELESS MESSAGE” and addressed to senior formations across the country disclosed that officers promoted from the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) would assume their new ranks with effect from the dates attached to their names.

The signal, with reference number SH.4730/FS/FHQ/ABJ/T.1/58, was dispatched to all zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police in all states, and other critical police units including FCID, INTERPOL, MOPOL, Maritime, Airwing, Bomb Disposal, Border Patrol, and Terrorism Units.

Part of the leaked message reads:

“POLSCOM in its letter No. PSC/PROM/1/1096/II dated 20/08/2025 on IGP’s recommendation has approved the promotion of the under-listed ASPs to substantive rank of DSPs with effect from date indicated against their names.”

Among those promoted are: Maidawa Yakubu (AP126345), Edwin A. Thomas (AP129283), Chagga Yakubu (AP136869), Ofem Liket Hassan (AP130266), Sabo Danladi Mamuda (AP137436), Omini Dickson (AP134041), Bassey Alobo (AP132333), Enyinnaya Ejimadu (AP132430) and Grace Dkon (AP132337) ASP to DSP.

The full list contains 951 names, covering officers across all states and specialised police formations.

The latest round of promotions comes at a time when the Nigeria Police has faced repeated criticism over corruption, poor welfare of officers, and compromised recruitment processes.

This development is coming a few weeks after a protest led by human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, demanding better conditions for the police workforce and retired police personnel.

The protest was held on July 21 amid paltry payments to retired police officers as their retirement benefits.

The protesters also demanded better welfare for police personnel, lampooning the work conditions officers are subjected to.

Interestingly, while the police force, led by Kayode Egbetokun, has been taking frantic measures to douse the growing discontent within its ranks—including submitting a letter to the National Assembly and its latest move of setting up a committee—it is set to prosecute Sowore for demanding better welfare conditions for police officials, claiming the protest he led could have encouraged mutiny.

The police force, with its latest move, appears to be acknowledging the poor working conditions of its staff through the formulation of the committee.
