The Federal Government has announced a significant overhaul of the country’s Basic Education curriculum, introducing 15 new vocational skills aimed at enhancing students’ employability and practical abilities. This revamped curriculum is set to be implemented in January 2025, following its approval by the National Council on Education.

To ensure a smooth transition, the government has outlined a three-month preparation period during which both private and public schools will be equipped for the changes. Key initiatives during this period will include teacher training, the creation of instructional guides, and necessary infrastructure upgrades.

The updated curriculum focuses on providing Nigerian students with modern skills such as digital literacy, robotics, and a variety of vocational and entrepreneurial opportunities. Students will have the flexibility to choose from these courses, ensuring they acquire practical knowledge that aligns with the demands of the economy.

The government’s overarching aim is to foster self-reliance among students and enhance their competitiveness on a global scale. The 15 new trades included in the curriculum are:

    1. Plumbing

    2. Tiling and Floor Works

    3. POP Installation

    4. Event Decoration and Management

    5. Bakery and Confectioneries

    6. Hairstyling

    7. Makeup

    8. Interior Design

    9. GSM Repairs

    10. Satellite/TV Antenna Installation

    11. CCTV, Intercom Installation, and Maintenance

    12. Solar Installation and Maintenance

    13. Garment Making

    14. Agriculture and Processing (covering crop production, beekeeping, horticulture, sheep and goat farming, poultry, and rabbit farming)

    15. Basic Digital Literacy (including IT and Robotics)

This initiative seeks to empower students with the skills necessary to thrive in an evolving job market.
