Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State has urged the Federal Government to regulate social media platforms in Nigeria, citing concerns over their misuse and the proliferation of fake news.
Bago emphasized that such regulation would help curb the dissemination of false information while encouraging objective reporting by traditional journalists. He made these remarks during his investiture as the Grand Patron of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Niger State Council, on Thursday.
The governor’s call for social media censorship echoes similar sentiments expressed by other political figures, including President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
National President of the NUJ, Chris Isiguzo, commended Governor Bago for his exemplary leadership and presented him with a certificate of recognition. Isiguzo highlighted the importance of journalism in shaping democracy and urged journalists to uphold objectivity in their reporting.
Bago expressed gratitude for the honor bestowed upon him by the NUJ, pledging to continue his administration’s efforts to transform Niger State. He emphasized the need for continued development in infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, governance, and education.
Isiguzo cited Governor Bago’s notable achievements in various sectors as the basis for the conferment of the award.
