The National Consultative Committee on Statistics (NCCS) kicked off its second Biannual Meeting on Wednesday at the Unity Hall of the Government House in Asaba. This year’s theme, “Enhancing Data Integration and Interoperability within the Nigerian Statistical System,” has drawn statisticians, policymakers, and key stakeholders nationwide to deliberate on the future of data management in Nigeria.

In his keynote address, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, the Statistician-General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), expressed both pride in and a sense of responsibility towards the advancements made in Nigeria’s statistical framework. He underscored the increasing necessity for data integration and interoperability to effectively tackle the multifaceted developmental challenges facing the nation, asserting that dependence on isolated data sources is inadequate.

Adeniran introduced two significant initiatives—the Integrated System of Administrative Statistics (ISAS) and the State Gross Domestic Product (SGDP)—which, once fully implemented, are poised to greatly enhance Nigeria’s statistical capabilities. These initiatives aim to streamline data collection processes, improve accuracy, and bolster policy formulation through enhanced data systems.

The NCCS acts as Nigeria’s primary coordinating body for statistical activities, facilitating collaboration and knowledge exchange among various data-producing agencies. Adeniran called on attendees to engage with a sense of duty to ensure that the meeting yields meaningful improvements in the country’s statistical operations.

Delta State’s Honourable Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Sonny Akporokiamo Ekedayen, extended a warm welcome to participants, highlighting the vital importance of accurate and timely data for effective decision-making and planning. He noted that the conference’s theme is particularly relevant in light of Nigeria’s existing fragmented data systems. Ekedayen also showcased some of Delta State’s recent accomplishments, including the 2024 Delta State Market Calendar, the 2024 Road Traffic Survey, and the Delta State Statistical Yearbook, which aim to promote data-driven decision-making at the state level.

Throughout the two-day event, participants will explore strategies to address challenges in data management, enhance data quality and accessibility, and strengthen collaboration among federal, state, and local government agencies. Experts will also delve into technological innovations and capacity-building initiatives designed to improve data integration across Nigeria.

The meeting is anticipated to generate recommendations for developing a more efficient and robust statistical system, ultimately supporting better policy decisions and fostering national development. The event will conclude on November 28, 2024, with a renewed commitment to transforming Nigeria’s data landscape for future advancement
