NAFDAC Cracks Down on Sachet, PET Bottle Alcohol Sales in Delta

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) seized sachet and PET bottle alcoholic beverages under 200ml in Delta State during a raid on Wednesday.

Deputy Director and State Coordinator, Jude Ndekile, reiterated the Federal Government’s directive banning the production and sale of these products due to their accessibility to minors. The ban, initiated in 2018, included a five-year phase-out period ending in December 2023.

Ndekile stated, “Despite the ban and sensitisation campaigns, these products remain widespread, contributing to rising alcohol abuse among minors.”

During raids at Asaba Ogbeogonogo Modern Market and Midwifery Market in Oshimili Local Government Area, popular brands such as Orijin Bitters, Action Bitters, and Odogwu Bitters were confiscated.

NAFDAC plans to intensify enforcement in markets and auto parks, targeting drivers and transporters who frequently purchase these beverages. Manufacturers and distributors have been urged to comply with the directive to curb underage access.
