Pandemonium in Mining site as seven miners have been killed after a mining pit collapsed on them in Gassa community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening, August 13, 2026, while the victims were carrying out mining activities at the site.

A resident of the community, Albert Danlami, said the incident caused panic as residents rushed to the mining site following the collapse.

The Plateau State Commissioner for Environment, Climate Change and Mineral Development, Hon. Peter Kanang Gwom, expressed sadness over the incident and condoled with the families of the victims and the Gassa community.

Gwom said the loss of lives in mining-related incidents remained a serious concern.

He stressed the need to strengthen safety standards, regulatory compliance, monitoring and responsible mining practices to protect the lives and livelihoods of residents.

The Commissioner prayed for strength for the bereaved families and eternal rest for the victims.
