A political group, the G100 has commenced consultations with six major opposition parties as part of efforts to build a united and credible opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group disclosed this in a statement signed by Salihu Moh. Lukman, saying its representatives had engaged the leadership of African Democratic Congress, ADC; Alliance Peoples Movement, APM, Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC; Peoples Democratic Party, PDP; Peoples Redemption Party, PRP and Social Democratic Party, SDP.
According to the statement, the consultations involved national chairmen, presidential candidates and running mates of the parties and were aimed at advancing the principles contained in the group’s “Doctrine of Necessary Democratic Opposition.”
The G100 said the meetings were deliberately held away from the media to allow party leaders to discuss sensitive issues freely and constructively without pressure from premature public commentary.
It said the consultations had revealed a broad agreement among the opposition leaders on the need for greater cooperation ahead of the 2027 elections.
“The leaders we have engaged have also acknowledged that achieving a credible and effective opposition will require sacrifice, compromise and a willingness to place the larger interests of the country above narrow partisan or individual considerations,” the statement said.
Building on what it described as the convergence of views, the G100 announced plans for a Summit of Opposition Parties scheduled for Tuesday, August 18, 2026, in Abuja.
The summit, it said, would provide a platform for the participating parties to begin discussions on practical modalities for achieving greater opposition unity.
The group stressed that it would not dictate the outcome of the discussions, but would facilitate dialogue, build confidence and create an environment for the parties to address issues of cooperation, accommodation, sacrifice and collective action.
The G100 maintained that Nigeria’s democracy would be strengthened by the presence of a credible opposition capable of providing voters with a competitive alternative in the 2027 elections. It argued that continued fragmentation would undermine their ability to challenge the ruling establishment.
“The consultations of the past week represent only the beginning,” the group said, adding that the process would require “patience, courage and, above all, sacrifice.”
