In a significant victory against the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP), military forces from the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) have successfully neutralized 55 suspected members, including numerous high-ranking commanders. The operation, codenamed “Operation Harbin Zuma,” spanned over 22 days, from May 6 to May 28, and specifically targeted ISWAP strongholds in the Tumbums area near Arege in Malam Fatori, Borno State.

The Ministry of Defence in Niger Republic disclosed the successful operation, highlighting the coordinated efforts of troops from Sector 3 and Sector 4 of the MNJTF. Among the top ISWAP commanders eliminated were Fiya Abouzeid, Qaïd Abou Oumama, Qaïd Malam Moustapha, along with unidentified religious leaders.

The operation was made possible through close coordination between the Niger-Nigerian Air Task Force and ground forces, enabling the effective tracking and engagement of enemy forces. Additionally, 13 vehicles and 13 motorcycles belonging to the terrorists were destroyed, while five Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs) were successfully intercepted and neutralized.

The Nigerien Sector 4 MNJTF suffered two casualties and three soldiers were slightly wounded, with one Phantom Mrap vehicle sustaining damage. The specific casualty figures for the Nigerian side were not disclosed.

The primary objective of “Operation Harbin Zuma” was to dismantle the terrorists’ stronghold in Arege, Nigeria, and the mission has proven to be a resounding success. The elimination of these top commanders and terrorists deals a significant blow to ISWAP’s operations in the region and reinforces the commitment of military forces in maintaining peace and security.
