Maduka Okoye,  Super Eagles goalkeeper, scheduled for surgery

    Published on

The club formally declared on Saturday that Maduka Okoye will be forced to miss the forthcoming game against Monza, which is a crucial match for the team’s current campaign, due to this regrettable event.

A ruptured scapholunate ligament, a vital wrist tissue, is involved in the injury. This damage was caused by trauma received during a game.

To fix the ligament and give Okoye’s wrist its functioning back, medical professionals advise surgery right away.

Although Udinese has not provided an update on when Okoye is anticipated to return, there are worries that he might be sidelined for several months.

The typical recuperation period for such an accident is eight to twelve weeks, but in more severe situations, it may take up to eight months, which presents serious difficulties for both the  player and the club.

In his final game for Udinese, he played the entire game and showed off his exceptional skill by making three crucial stops to keep his team competitive in a heartbreaking 2-0 home loss to Genoa.

He has made 14 appearances and had 42 saves this season, making him a vital member of Udinese’s squad. He is now regarded and recognized in the league for his outstanding performances, which have placed him among the top four goalkeepers in Serie A.

Maduka Okoye’s path has been characterized by tenacity and resolve. He sought a new beginning in Italy after facing several difficulties at Watford, where he had few playing opportunities. He made this decision because he wanted to revive his career and demonstrate his worth as a reliable goalkeeper.

Apart from his club duties, Okoye has also played international football for Nigeria. His recent experiences have not been without difficulties; he was the target of criticism following Nigeria’s early elimination from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. In order to separate himself from the critical comments and concentrate on his mental health, he decided to temporarily stop using social media.

In the final game of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifications, a 2-1 loss to Rwanda, he recently returned to the national squad. But given his present wrist injury, there are increasing doubts over whether he will be able to play for the national team in March, especially with the 2026 World Cup qualifiers  loom on the horizon.
