Supporters of Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate, have sharply criticized remarks made by the Oba of Benin, HRH Ewuare II, regarding Akpata’s claimed affiliation with the Palace.
Tensions flared after Akpata, accompanied by Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, visited the Oba’s Palace on Saturday. During the visit, Akpata mentioned his connection to the Palace, prompting the Oba to clarify that although Akpata is respected in the community, he is not a direct son of the Palace.
In response, Labour Party supporters expressed their outrage on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Nairaland. Many felt the Oba’s remarks were disrespectful and undermined Akpata’s stature.
“Disappointed in the Oba’s disregard for our candidate. Akpata has shown dedication to Benin, and this is how he is treated,” one supporter lamented on Twitter.
On Facebook, another supporter commented, “The Oba should focus on tradition, not politics. Akpata is a son of Benin, and we stand by him.”
However, not all responses were critical. Some acknowledged the Oba’s role in upholding tradition and respecting the lineage of the Palace.
Amid the backlash, Akpata himself issued a statement condemning any disrespectful conduct towards the Oba. “I unequivocally denounce any disparaging remarks or actions towards the esteemed Oba of Benin,” Akpata stated.
Despite Akpata’s statement, a traditional chief from Benin, speaking anonymously, expressed disappointment in Akpata’s initial claim. “Akpata overstepped by claiming affiliation with the Palace. Such claims must be factual and respectful.”
With the Edo gubernatorial election set for September 21, 2024, this incident has added tension to the political landscape, and campaign activities are expected to intensify in the coming months, potentially influenced by the fallout from this episode.
