In a recent development, Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has been apprehended by operatives of the Edo State Police Command in Benin City, the capital of Edo State.

Abure’s arrest is reportedly linked to allegations of premeditated attempted murder and other purported infractions. The action was taken following a petition lodged by the LP Youth Leader, Comrade Eragbe Anselm Aphimia.

According to the petition dated February 13 and addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, Comrade Anselm detailed a harrowing incident that transpired on December 29, 2023. Allegedly, he and his delegation, authorized by the Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party, Alhaji Lamidi Basiru Apapa, were subjected to violence orchestrated by individuals associated with the party.

The petition narrates how upon arrival at Benin City Airport, they were deceived by a certain Mrs. Mary Okheime Newberry, who claimed to provide transportation and accommodation on behalf of unnamed “stakeholders.” Unbeknownst to them, this led to an ambush orchestrated at the Smart Homes Hotel, culminating in a violent attack just outside the hotel gates by a waiting mob.

The arrest of Abure comes in the wake of these allegations, as the police delve into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Further details are expected to emerge as investigations progress.
