The Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority (KSSQAA) has taken the decision to close Al-Azhar Academy, located on Turunku Road in Zaria, Kaduna State, following a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a Junior Secondary School III (Basic 9) student named Marwan Nuhu Sambo. The incident, which occurred on October 20, 2023, was reportedly the result of disciplinary actions taken due to the student’s absenteeism.
In response to this unfortunate event, a team from KSSQAA, representing the Kaduna State Government, conducted a fact-finding mission. The mission involved visits to Al-Azhar Academy, the victim’s family to offer condolences and engage with schoolmates, the Divisional Police Headquarters in Zaria where the school Principal and Vice-Principal were detained, and Hajiya Gambo Sawaba General Hospital, where the victim’s death was officially confirmed. The team also visited the gravesite where the victim was laid to rest.
The Kaduna State Government, led by Governor Uba Sani, is committed to ensuring a conducive learning environment, equity, and justice in the state’s educational institutions. The government has urged the public to remain calm and law-abiding while the investigation into this incident is ongoing to ensure that justice is served.
As an interim measure, and in accordance with its statutory powers, the Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority has closed Al-Azhar Academy in Zaria, and the school premises will remain sealed until the investigation is completed.
