Jonathan Urges Tinubu to End ‘Do or Die’ Politics for Nigeria’s Democratic Future

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged President Bola Tinubu to address the detrimental practice of “do or die” politics, which poses a significant threat to Nigeria’s democratic advancement. Speaking at a symposium celebrating 25 years of uninterrupted democracy, Jonathan emphasized the necessity for a more inclusive and cohesive democratic system.

Jonathan highlighted that Nigeria’s democracy should not be grounded in regional or religious biases but rather on principles of inclusivity and social cohesion. He encouraged President Tinubu to build upon the achievements of the past quarter-century by enhancing infrastructure, education, and opportunities for all citizens.

“Together, let us build a Nigeria where every citizen has a voice, where opportunities abound, where the promise of a better tomorrow is not just a dream. We must not hand over to our children a democracy built on politics of region or religion,” Jonathan stated.

He also urged the National Assembly to explore models suitable for Nigeria, addressing the root causes of “do or die” politics, which he described as inimical to consolidating democracy. Jonathan stressed that the political class must set an example by ensuring the dividends of democracy benefit all Nigerians, regardless of their economic or social status.

Jonathan cautioned against the “winner takes all” mentality, advocating for a system where all parties have a stake, even if they do not win. He noted, “So for the honourable Vice President, we are hoping that you build more infrastructure for us, improve the quality of education, facilities, etc. One key thing also is that, for the next twenty-five years, you will need to build a democracy that will reduce friction.”

He pointed out that the numerous litigations following each election cycle are highly disruptive and need to be minimized for a solid and enduring democracy. Jonathan expressed confidence that President Tinubu, who played a crucial role in the June 12 crisis, has the capacity to navigate this process effectively.

The symposium, attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima and other dignitaries, marked a quarter-century of democratic rule in Nigeria.
