Nigerian music star Seyi Shay is stirring up a bold conversation about what we sing in church — and why some of it might be doing more harm than good.

In a thought-provoking post on her Instagram story, the singer revealed why she stopped attending her former church, and it had nothing to do with doctrine or drama — but everything to do with the songs they were singing.

According to Seyi Shay, one of the leaders at her old church insisted that the congregation stop singing contemporary gospel songs and stick strictly to hymns and scriptures.

    Her response?
“I stopped going to that church. PERIODT.”

    And here’s why.

The singer questioned how anyone could feel “blessed and happy” singing hymns that were originally written by slave owners and forced on enslaved Africans during torture and dehumanization.

“Makes no sense,” she wrote. “Do your research! Ignorance is NOT Godly!”
