Hoodlums have set the National Open University (NOUN) centre in Ezeoke Nsu, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State ablaze, just days after rumors surfaced about the facility’s potential conversion into an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) centre. The attack, which occurred around 9 p.m. on Monday, also targeted the residence of former Okigwe North Senator, Frank Ibezim.
The incident has caused panic within the community, with many residents fleeing for safety. Reacting on Tuesday, Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma condemned the arson, labeling it a “senseless and unwarranted attack.” He added that such acts of violence jeopardize the security of local communities.
“The Command stands firmly against such acts and will take all necessary measures in synergy with other security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice,” Danjuma emphasized.
He assured the public that the police will conduct a thorough investigation, with the Tactical Unit already deployed to apprehend the attackers. The Deputy Commissioner of Police, responsible for the State Criminal Investigation, is leading the investigation.
Danjuma also urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation and making inciting statements that could destabilize the state. He warned that individuals found guilty of perpetuating false information will face strict legal consequences.
