The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, has commenced the return airlift of Nigerian pilgrims from Saudi Arabia and warned them against travelling with Zamzam holy water and other contraband items.
The warning came midweek as the homebound phase of the 2026 Hajj operations began after pilgrims spent about 30 days in the Kingdom.
NAHCON.disclosed in a statement by its management that the return airlift began with the departure of 560 pilgrims from Nasarawa State on Wednesday apart from three additional return flights scheduled for same day.
The Commission reminded pilgrims not to pack Zamzam water or other prohibited items in their luggage.
“Pilgrims are reminded not to include Zamzam water or prohibited items in their luggage, as such items will be confiscated during screening thereby exposing their bags to tampering,” NAHCON warned.
Prohibited items listed include flammable substances such as lighter fluid, lithium batteries and power banks in checked baggage, aerosols, excessive quantities of liquids, and sharp objects in hand luggage.
NAHCON advised returning pilgrims to adhere strictly to the approved baggage allowance: two check-in bags weighing 23 kilograms each and one hand luggage not exceeding 8 kilograms.
“Multiple hand luggage will not be condoned,” the Commission stated.
It added that luggage screening is scheduled 48 hours prior to the departure date so pilgrims can receive their bags early upon arrival in Nigeria.
“Compliance with these requirements will facilitate smooth screening and quicker clearance of pilgrims for departure,” NAHCON advised.
It also appreciated the cooperation of the four official air carriers who commenced operations on schedule despite high aviation fuel costs.
“The Commission seizes this opportunity to re-assure the Carriers of government’s determination to assist in ensuring that the carriers do not suffer losses from the airlift operations,” it stated.
