The Federal Government has cautioned residents of parts of northern Nigeria to brace for possible flooding as heavy rainfall is expected between August 25 and 29, 2025.

In a statement released on Monday by the National Flood Early Warning Centre (NFEWC) under the Federal Ministry of Environment, the government identified nine states and 15 communities at risk of flooding during the period.

The advisory, signed by the Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, urged residents in the listed areas to take precautionary measures.

According to the forecast, communities likely to be affected include: Abba-Kumbo, Mubi, and Shelleng in Adamawa; Azare and Jama’a in Bauchi; Ngala in Borno; Nafada in Gombe; Gwaram in Jigawa; Sumaila in Kano; Bindawa, Kaita, and Katsina in Katsina State; Makira in Sokoto; and Anka in Zamfara.

The Ministry further warned that water levels in the River Niger have continued to rise, increasing the risk of flooding along the flood plains stretching from Jebba to Lokoja.

Residents of these areas have been advised to move to safer ground without delay.

The latest warning comes just days after the ministry issued a similar alert on Saturday, predicting possible flooding in seven states and 25 locations across the country between August 23 and 24.

Authorities noted that the alerts are part of ongoing efforts to reduce loss of lives and property, urging communities, state governments, and emergency response agencies to remain on high alert.
