FG orders MDAs to follow spending framework

    Published on

The Federal Government of Nigeria has directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, to strictly comply with the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework, MTEF, as part of efforts to strengthen budget credibility and promote fiscal discipline across public institutions.

The directive was issued by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, during a courtesy visit by the Fiscal Responsibility Commission in Abuja.

He stressed that adherence to the framework was essential for maintaining accountability in public spending and ensuring a stable fiscal environment.

According to him, “MTEF adherence is critical for a coordinated and disciplined fiscal environment supporting economic growth.”

Akume explained that the framework helps government spending reflect national priorities and development goals.

He noted that the MTEF “aligns public expenditure with national development objectives,” adding that the approach promotes predictability and sustainability in budgeting processes.

Speaking during the visit, Chairman of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission, Victor Chinmerem Muruako, acknowledged ongoing fiscal reforms and expressed appreciation for the administration’s policy direction. He noted that reforms under Bola Tinubu provided necessary support for the commission’s oversight responsibilities.

The government says stricter compliance with the expenditure framework was expected to improve financial management in public institutions, strengthen fiscal responsibility, and ensure that national resources were managed in line with development needs.
