In response to widespread protests over soaring food prices and economic challenges, the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to potentially import food as a strategic measure to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.

The decision, disclosed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, follows intense deliberations by the Special Presidential Committee on Emergency Food Intervention. The government aims to address the high cost of food items by ensuring immediate availability of essential commodities.

As an interim measure, the government has ordered the release of 102,000 metric tonnes of rice and maize from the national grain reserve. Additionally, discussions with the Rice Millers Association have resulted in a commitment to release approximately 60,000 metric tonnes of rice from their storage facilities.

The overarching goal is to stabilize food prices and mitigate the impact of food scarcity on Nigerians. To achieve this, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has been directed to invest significantly in food production, collaborating with local farmers to boost agricultural output.

The government has also issued a stern warning to individuals or entities hoarding food items, emphasizing the need for cooperation in ensuring food availability. Those found hoarding essential commodities will face severe sanctions as the government takes decisive action to prevent exploitation of the current situation.

In light of the broader economic challenges, including inflation and forex-related issues, the government urges Nigerians to demonstrate patriotism by refraining from excessive price hikes. The current situation is deemed an emergency requiring collective efforts to safeguard the well-being of all citizens.

While addressing concerns about inflation and the general cost of living, the government emphasizes the importance of national solidarity and mutual support during challenging times. By working together, Nigeria can navigate through this crisis and emerge stronger.
