The Federal Ministry of Education has debunked claims that students under 18 years old are barred from taking the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) exams. The clarification was made by Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, during an event marking International Literacy Day in Abuja.

Sununu addressed the public’s misunderstanding of recent comments by Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, stating that the minister’s remarks were about the recommended 18-year entry age for tertiary institutions, not secondary school exams. He emphasized that exceptional students with advanced intellectual abilities could still be accommodated under certain guidelines.
