In a move aimed at empowering inmates across Nigeria’s 241 correctional facilities, the Federal Government has launched a vocational training program to equip them with skills for life beyond incarceration.

Senior Special Adviser to the President on Technical, Vocational, and Entrepreneurship Education, Abiola Arogundade, announced the commencement of the initiative during a press conference held in Abuja on Wednesday.

President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to facilitating the reintegration of inmates into society underscores the importance of this program. Arogundade highlighted that upon completion of the skills acquisition program, each participant will receive a grant of N500,000 to support their transition back into society.

Nigeria’s Correctional Service operates numerous custodial facilities and training institutions across the country. The pilot phase of the vocational training program is set to kick off at the Kuje Centre, which currently houses 723 inmates but will focus on training 500 individuals initially.

The program encompasses a diverse range of vocational skills, including fashion design, computer training, hairdressing, fish farming, soap making, and poultry business. Arogundade emphasized the importance of partnering with global organizations to ensure that the skills acquired by inmates are internationally recognized.

Furthermore, the initiative aims to reduce recidivism rates by targeting inmates nearing the end of their sentences. Modeled after successful programs in other countries such as Norway, where reoffending rates are notably low, the Nigerian government is committed to providing inmates with the necessary skills and resources for a successful reintegration into society.

As the program expands to other correctional facilities beyond Kuje, efforts will be made to engage inmates in the decision-making process, ensuring their active participation and willingness to undergo vocational training.

The government’s collaboration with financial institutions and industry partners will further enhance the program’s effectiveness, providing inmates with opportunities for sustainable income generation through various business ventures.

With a focus on empowerment and rehabilitation, the vocational training program represents a significant step towards addressing the challenges faced by inmates and promoting their successful reintegration into society.
