FCT strike suspended as Wike, labour unions reach agreement

    Published on

The industrial action by workers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has been officially suspended following a breakthrough agreement between the FCT Administration and organised labour.

The resolution came after an overnight conciliatory meeting with the Minister of the FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike. The meeting, convened at the instance of the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the FCT, Senator Mohammed Bomoi, started at 11:45 p.m. on Monday and concluded at 3:51 a.m. on Tuesday.

Organised labour, under the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), described the discussions as “extensive and frank,” leading to the amicable resolution of all grievances raised by members of the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC).

Following the agreement, all JUAC members and affiliates of the NLC and TUC working in the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory (MFCT) were directed to resume work immediately to restore industrial peace.

Minister Wike assured workers of mutual respect and continued engagement, emphasising that no employee would face victimisation for participating in the strike. Both parties also agreed that all pending cases at the National Industrial Court (NIC) relating to the dispute would be withdrawn.

The suspension of the strike brings an end to days of halted activities in the FCT, ensuring the resumption of critical public services and the continuation of ongoing government projects.
