Former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele has taken legal action against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, alleging defamatory statements made against him. Emefiele claims that Akpabio’s comments during a public event portrayed him unfairly as the cause of Nigeria’s economic challenges.

Akpabio’s televised remarks suggested uncertainty regarding potential charges against Emefiele, including economic mismanagement, illegal possession of firearms, and unauthorized currency printing. Emefiele’s legal team, led by Matthew Burkaa, SAN, demanded an immediate retraction, a written apology, and a staggering N25 billion as compensation for the alleged defamation.

The letter addressed to Akpabio emphasized the damaging nature of the statements, their impact on Emefiele’s reputation, and the inappropriateness of discussing a pending legal matter in public. Additionally, it highlighted Emefiele’s contributions to the economy, including his efforts in the P&ID Saga and the necessity of presidential and executive council approval for policy decisions.

Failure to comply with the demands may prompt further legal action from Emefiele, signaling a contentious legal battle between high-ranking figures in Nigerian politics. This development has stirred widespread interest, prompting reflection on the responsibilities and actions of key figures in shaping the nation’s economic landscape.
