The NNPC Foundation has commissioned and handed over a fully installed 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) System to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi, in a move aimed at improving access to advanced healthcare services across Nigeria’s South-East region.
The state-of-the-art MRI facility, donated as part of the foundation’s corporate social responsibility initiative, is expected to benefit millions of residents in Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi and neighbouring Delta State by providing faster and more affordable diagnostic imaging services.
The intervention included the delivery, installation, calibration and commissioning of the MRI machine, alongside supporting infrastructure such as RF shielding systems, chillers, backup UPS systems, electrical installations, ventilation systems, CCTV, oxygen monitoring systems and patient comfort technologies.
Before the intervention, many patients requiring MRI scans faced long waiting periods, high costs and the burden of travelling long distances to access functional imaging centres.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony at the Igwe Orizu ICT Centre, NAUTH Permanent Site, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, represented by the Managing Director of NNPC Foundation, Emmanuella Arukwe, described the project as a strategic investment in healthcare access and improved patient outcomes.
According to him, the intervention reflects the company’s commitment to building sustainable institutions and ensuring quality healthcare for Nigerians.
Representing the Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, the Commissioner for Health, Afam Obidike, commended the initiative, noting that the MRI facility would enhance safe and precise diagnosis and treatment across the region.
Also speaking, Executive Vice President, Business Services at NNPC Ltd., Sophia Mbakwe, represented by Chief Supply Chain Officer Isokariari Telema, reiterated the company’s commitment to impactful social investments nationwide.
