Adolescent girls have been encouraged to practice hygiene during their menstrual cycle, in order to prevent infections.
The Founder/CEO of Al-Masareef Foundation, Dr Hauwa Aminu Wambai, stated this at the annual Menstrual Hygiene Management Sensitisation, in commemoration of the International Day For Menstrual Hygiene.
The sensitisation took place in three schools of the FCT, namely: Junior Secondary School, Area 1; JSS Garki Area 10, and JSS Garki Area 11, where adolescent girls were taught how to maintain hygiene during their menstrual cycle.
Wambai said that, with the right information, education and guidance, no girl should miss school or any important function as a result of her menstrual cycle.
She also encouraged adolescent girls
to learn skills alongside getting a formal education.
Wambai, who noted that formal education is very important for self development, added that skill acquisition is equally important for self reliance and a supplementary source of income.
A youth advocate, Chiamaka Udenze, spoke on drug abuse, and advised that prevention is better than cure, further advised girls to resist peer pressure on trying illicit drugs as the effects are dangerous and difficult to reverse.
Daily NewsCraft reports that 300 girls from three junior secondary schools benefitted from the exercise and went home with a pack of sanitary pads
Al-Masareef Foundation is an NGO established to support the Girl Child Education.
