Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, expressed that the nation’s peace comes at a significant cost, paid with the blood, limbs, and sacrifices made by military personnel and their families. Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja made these remarks at the 2023 COAS Christmas Carol event held at Mogadishu Cantonment Parade Ground in Abuja.

Acknowledging the dedication of military men and women who serve as guardians of the land, Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja emphasized the challenges faced by those on the frontlines and their families during festive seasons. Drawing from personal experiences, he recognized the loneliness and homesickness endured by military families, emphasizing that such sacrifices are made for the love of the nation and humanity.

The COAS praised the bravery, service, and dedication of the military personnel, stating that their example serves as an inspiration to many. He conveyed the gratitude of the government and the people for their contributions.

The Christmas carol event was described as an occasion to sing praises to God, read His words, and express thanks for the outgoing year. Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja highlighted the uniqueness of the Christmas season, symbolizing love, hope, giving, and sharing. He emphasized the importance of events like the Christmas Carol service and social gatherings to create a sense of belonging for military families and troops on the frontlines.

Addressing those serving on the frontlines, Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja encouraged them to share joyful moments with colleagues and extend love to the less privileged around them. He assured all military personnel that the entire nation stood behind them in their fight against adversaries.

The Christmas Carol included singing praises, worship, hymns by gospel artists, and performances by military mass choirs. Dignitaries present at the event included the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, and his wife, as well as other military and police representatives. The army chief’s wife and members of the Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association, along with the barracks community, also attended the event.
