COAS hails Nigerian Army at 162

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has saluted the courage of officers, soldiers, and families of the Nigerian Army on the occasion of the 2025 Nigerian Army Day Celebration, commemorating the Army’s 162 years of service to the nation.

Oluyede in a goodwill message delivered on his behalf by the General Officer Commanding, 8 DIV, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, to mark the commencement of NADCEL on Sunday, described the anniversary as “significant and symbolic.”

Marking the celebration with a Jummat prayer and an interdenominational church service in Abuja, the COAS emphasised the Army’s deep-rooted tradition of seeking divine guidance and expressing gratitude for victories and resilience in the face of adversity

“This is a moment of profound joy and reflection. The Nigerian Army stands tall today, after 162 years of gallant service to the fatherland.

“It is a legacy built on courage, sacrifice, and the unwavering grace of God,” the Army Chief said.

Reflecting on the past year, Oluyede paid tribute to his predecessor, the late Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who passed on in November 2024, and described him as a dedicated leader whose contributions will continue to inspire generations of soldiers.

He acknowledged the current security challenges confronting the nation and reiterated the Nigerian Army’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity, protecting citizens’ rights, and supporting civil authorities, even as he urged officers and soldiers to renew their loyalty and dedication to national unity, peace, and prosperity.

He stated, “Our soldiers have consistently exemplified professionalism, discipline, and commitment.

“We stand today as a force focused on victory, guided by our motto: Victory is from God alone.”

On the theme of this year’s celebration, “Developing the Soldier First Concept: Imperative for Nigerian Army Transformation Drive,” the COAS said it reflects the Army’s strategic vision of transformation, morale-boosting, and enhanced combat readiness.

He outlined his command philosophy, which centres on consolidating the Army’s transformation into a well-motivated, combat-ready force capable of executing its constitutional roles within a joint and multi-agency framework.

“NADCEL 2025 offers us a platform to reflect on our achievements, honour our heroes, and commit ourselves to future goals in national defence and development,” Oluyede added.

He reaffirmed the Army Headquarters’ dedication to the welfare of troops and their families, especially those who have been wounded in action or made the ultimate sacrifice.

“To these heroes and their families, we owe an unpayable debt of gratitude.

“Happy NADCEL 2025. Long live the Nigerian Army, long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
