Clark Urges Damagum: Don’t Let PDP Collapse on You

Chief Edwin Clark has issued a strong plea to Ambassador Illiya Damagum, the acting national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urging him to step down from his position and prevent the party from crumbling under his leadership.

In an open letter dated April 24, 2024, addressed to Damagum, Clark expressed his concern over the apparent weaknesses within the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC). He criticized the committee for allowing the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to exert undue influence during meetings, noting a lack of willingness to challenge authority.

Clark’s letter emphasized the need for decisive action, urging Damagum to either improve his leadership or resign to prevent further damage to the party. He highlighted concerns that Damagum’s leadership appeared to align closely with Wike’s interests, raising questions about his independence.

The elder statesman also lamented Damagum’s perceived inaction in addressing the PDP crisis in Rivers State, including the defection of PDP lawmakers and issues surrounding the caretaker committee.

Furthermore, Clark highlighted the influence of Wike within the party, suggesting that Damagum’s appointment as acting national chairman may have been influenced by the Rivers State governor. He pointed out the composition of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), which he claimed included individuals aligned with Wike’s agenda.

Clark’s letter underscores the deep-seated concerns within the PDP regarding leadership dynamics and the party’s ability to maintain cohesion and effectiveness amidst internal challenges.
