Chelsea, Lyon, and Real Madrid Secure Women’s Champions League Quarter-Final Spots

Chelsea, Lyon, and Real Madrid have all reached the quarter-finals of the 2024 Women’s Champions League, after impressive victories on Wednesday.

Chelsea made light work of Celtic, securing a 3-0 win to top Group B with a perfect record. England international Lucy Bronze opened the scoring early with a volley in the second minute, followed by a header from Dutch midfielder Wieke Kaptein midway through the first half. Eve Perisset added a third from the penalty spot in stoppage time, ensuring the Women’s Super League leaders won all four of their group games. Chelsea’s manager, Sonia Bompastor, expressed her delight, praising the team for their early goal, clean sheet, and overall performance.

Real Madrid joined Chelsea in the quarter-finals from the same group after a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Twente. The Dutch team took the lead through Jaimy Ravensbergen, but Real Madrid fought back, with Linda Caicedo scoring just before halftime and Signe Bruun and Alba Redondo adding two more for the Spanish side. Despite Twente’s late goal from Sophie Te Brake, Madrid secured the win and could not be caught by Twente in the standings. Danish forward Signe Bruun expressed optimism about Real Madrid’s prospects in the competition.

Lyon, meanwhile, continued their dominance in Group A, coming from behind to defeat Roma 4-1. Roma shocked the French side with a goal from Giulia Dragoni, but Lyon responded with a brace from Kadidiatou Diani and later added goals from Eugenie Le Sommer and captain Wendie Renard to secure the win. Lyon are undefeated in the group, six points clear of second-placed Roma, who will now need to face Wolfsburg on December 11 in a crucial match to determine their fate.

Wolfsburg also put in a dominant performance, thrashing Galatasaray 5-0 for the second time in the group stage, with Alexandra Popp scoring a hat-trick. The result left Galatasaray at the bottom of the group, still without a point.
