The Confederation of African Football (CAF), in collaboration with the Local Organising Committee, has unveiled the official mascot for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025. The mascot, named Assad, which means “lion”, draws inspiration from one of Morocco’s most iconic national emblems, the Atlas Lion.
The tournament will kick off on Sunday, December 21, 2025, and run through Sunday, January 18, 2026.
In a statement published Monday on CAF’s website, the organisation described Assad as a figure “inspired by the Atlas lion, one of Morocco’s most iconic national symbols and a unifying and powerful figure across the African continent. His name, meaning ‘lion’ in Arabic, embodies strength, pride, and cultural authenticity that resonates deeply with fans both in Morocco and throughout Africa.”
CAF noted that Assad, as the tournament’s ambassador, reflects “the joy, passion, and energy that define Africa’s most prestigious football competition.” The mascot is expected to help foster an emotional bond with fans, especially children and families, who remain central to football culture and the sport’s future.
According to CAF, Assad will be visible across stadiums, fan zones, and community activities, playing a leading role in fan engagement. He will also support international marketing campaigns, enhance digital content and interactive experiences, and contribute to CAF’s long-term branding efforts.
On his visual design, CAF explained that Assad is portrayed as a “friendly, youthful lion” whose expressive features and vibrant personality “reflect the warmth, creativity, and diversity of Africa.” His colours and style align closely with the TotalEnergies AFCON Morocco 2025 brand identity, creating a cohesive and dynamic look for the competition.
CAF further revealed that Assad’s role will extend beyond the tournament. The mascot will feature in grassroots and youth development programmes, school sports initiatives, community football events, and future digital storytelling projects. Designed as a long-term ambassador for African football, Assad is expected to inspire a new generation of young fans across the continent.
“With Assad leading the way, the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Morocco 2025 is poised to deliver an unforgettable experience, celebrating unity, pride, and the power of African football,” the release concluded. “The introduction of Assad represents a major milestone in shaping the tournament’s character and deepening its cultural impact.”
Earlier in December, FIFA announced December 15 as the mandatory date for clubs to release players for AFCON 2025.
