Bayelsa State’s weekly Prosperity Walk on Thursday recorded an unprecedented turnout in honour of the late Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
Governor Douye Diri had, during the 177th State Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, urged residents to participate in the five-kilometre walk as a tribute to his late deputy, who was an active participant in the programme from its inception.
Top government officials joined the exercise, including the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, state legislators, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, the Head of Service, Dr. Ebiye Sawyer, commissioners, political appointees, and civil servants.
The walk ended at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa.
Addressing participants, many of whom wore customised black T-shirts bearing Ewhrudjakpo’s image with the inscription Lawrence @ 60, Governor Diri described his deputy’s passing as painful and difficult to accept.
While appreciating the large turnout, the governor noted that impact, not longevity, defines a meaningful life.
“Ewhrudjakpo’s sudden departure is very painful for all of us. When I introduced this weekly walk, my deputy stood firmly with me. He never opposed any policy I initiated,” Diri said.
“I am grateful that we came out in such numbers to honour him. I urge everyone to sustain this habit even during the yuletide season, as it promotes good health.”
Other dignitaries at the walk included the Leader of the House of Assembly, Monday Obolo-Bubou, the Chief of Staff, Government House, Dr. Peter Akpe, and his deputy, Irorodamie Komonibo.
