    APC Chairman, Yilwatda tasks journalists to uphold objectivity, truth

     National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has urged journalists in the country to phold objectivity and truth in their reporting, emphasizing that a vibrant and independent press is crucial for Nigeria’s democracy.
    Speaking on the theme: ‘Strengthening the media for credible reporting and democratic accountability’ during the press week held yesterday at Nnam Hotels in Makurdi, Yilwatda stressed that journalists have a unique responsibility to tell the the countries story with truth, depth, and fairness, as well as to amplify the voices, concerns, and hopes of the people to the national stage.
    Yilwatda, who was represented by the State Chairman of the APC, Benue State chapter, Benjamin Omale, acknowledged the pressures facing journalism presently, including threats to life, harassment and intimidation, political toxicity and security threats.
    Describing the Benue State Journalists’ Week as essential, Yilwatda also emphasised the importance of journalists remaining faithful to the ethics of journalism, being fearless but fair, seeking truth, and defending Nigeria’s unity in their reporting.
    He advised the pen pushers to uphold objectivity and truth giving the crucial role they play in the nation’s democracy .
    Also speaking, the Chairman of the occasion, Chief Douglas Pepe (SAN), emphasised the crucial role journalists play in building the society especially in a democratic dispensation, advising Benue journalists to always be guided by objectivity and responsible reportage.
    In his welcome speech, Chairman of NUJ Benue State Council, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, expressed gratitude to Alia for his unwavering support to journalists in the state.
    The NUJ chairman also commended the  visionary leadership of the governor, adding the style of leadership that has redefined the meaning of governance, demonstrated through transparency, innovation, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of Benue people.
    Ugber appealed to Alia to consider donating an official car for the Office of the Chairman of NUJ Benue State Council, citing the need for mobility and efficiency in carrying out union duties.
    The NUJ chairman during the occasion also announced the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of 20 lock-up shops at the NUJ Secretariat, Makurdi, which he noted will serve as a revenue-generating venture to support the union’s activities and appealed for support from members of the public.
