Anambra Probes Alleged Assault on Former Chamber of Commerce Boss

    Published on

The Anambra State Government has launched an investigation into the alleged assault of Okey Akaneme, the former President of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (OCCIMA), by officials of the state Waste Management Agency (ASWAMA) and police officers.

Felix Odumegwu, the state Commissioner for Environment, confirmed the probe, emphasizing that the government does not condone assault or misconduct by any officials. Preliminary findings suggest that ASWAMA personnel might not be responsible for the attack, but the investigation is ongoing.

The alleged assault occurred on October 11 at Akaneme’s residence in Onitsha when ASWAMA officials, accompanied by two policemen, reportedly stormed his home over unpaid sanitation fees. Witnesses claimed that Akaneme, who was in his sleepwear, requested time to prepare but was forcibly detained. Neighbors attempted to intervene, but the assault left Akaneme with severe spinal injuries, including a 65% spinal cord damage.

Akaneme was initially treated at Holy Rosary Specialist Hospital in Onitsha before being transferred to Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital in Nnewi, and later moved to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, for further care.

The incident, which gained widespread attention on social media, has sparked outrage. Human rights groups and residents have condemned the state government’s delay in responding and are calling for accountability.

Odumegwu assured that the government is prioritizing Akaneme’s health and confirmed that the matter was reported to the police. The investigation has since been transferred to the State CID in Awka.
