The Abia State government has procured some electric buses for its mass transit transport scheme, the State Commissioner for Information of the state, Prince Okey Kanu has revealed.
Briefing journalists in Umuahia after the State Executive Council meeting, Okey Kanu informed that the vehicles are being fabricated in China, adding that they would be delivered to the state in November 2025.
According to the commissioner, the routes for the buses have been marked out and that all necessary logistic support has been put in place in readiness for the successful take-off of the scheme.
On what the state government is doing to promote the culture of Ndigbo, the state information boss stated that in line with the cultural revolution being promoted by the governor, the State Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy would launch a creative talent programme across 17 LGAs of the state on July 25, 2025.
The initiative, he disclosed, is meant to scout for artistic and other creative talents across 17 LGAs of the state, noting that the programme would foster youth inclusion and grassroots empowerment of the youth population in the state.
“This programme further underscores the state government’s commitment to cultural innovation with the engagement and global visibility of Abia’s creative potential in line with the vision of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti OFR”, Prince Kanu stated.
He revealed that Abia State has begun formal proceedings to position Aba as a UNESCO Creative City, noting that, a delegation is set to visit Aba this week for early-stage assessments of Aba, pointing out that the strategic move is aimed to elevate Aba’s creative profile globally while aligning with global standards.
On the perennial water challenge in Abia, Kanu said the state governor, Dr. Alex Otti will on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, flag off the rehabilitation of the Aba Regional Water Scheme at CKC Aba, in fulfillment of one of his campaign promises of returning potable water to the homes of Abians in the cities and communities in the state.
The governor, he maintained, will also launch the Integrated Wash Accelerator Programme (IWAP), a project located at the newly constructed Wash Facility at Okigwe Park, in Umuahia on Wednesday, and that is designed to bring water sanitation and hygiene back on track in the state.
The Abia commissioner remarked that some of the events billed to be launched by Governor Otti have been postponed due to the public holiday declared by the Federal Government following the death of President Muhammadu Buhari.
