The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Senator Nenadi Usman, has urged Nigerian political leaders to place patriotism above partisanship as the country prepares for another electoral cycle.
Usman, while speaking with journalists at the weekend in Jos during the 80th birthday celebration of former Governor of Plateau and old Benue States, Senator Jonah David Jang, said Nigeria’s progress depends on leaders putting national interest ahead of personal and partisan gains.
“While political competition remains an essential ingredient of democracy, it must never be allowed to degenerate into bitterness, hatred or the destruction of the country’s social fabric.
“The next election should not be a battle against fellow Nigerians. It should be a contest of ideas, competence and character. When elections are over, we must all return to the same Nigeria. That is why patriotism must always be greater than politics,” she stated.
The LP Chairman stressed that Nigerians deserve leaders who unite rather than divide, and who inspire hope instead of fear.
“Our political parties may be different, but our country is one. We owe future generations the responsibility of conducting politics without destroying the bonds that hold our nation together,” she said.
She called for greater civility in political discourse and urged politicians and supporters to reject inflammatory rhetoric.
“History does not remember those who shouted the loudest. It remembers those who built the strongest institutions, protected democracy and put their country first.
“We must disagree without becoming enemies. Democracy flourishes where there is tolerance, respect for differing opinions and an unwavering commitment to peace,” she said.
Paying tribute to the celebrant, she described Senator Jang as a patriot whose service in the military and in democratic governance has earned him a respected place in Nigeria’s history.
“At 80, Senator Jonah Jang represents a generation of leaders whose lives remind us that public office is ultimately about service, honour and legacy. We celebrate not only his longevity but also his enduring contributions to nation-building,” she stated.
