The Plateau State Governor-elect, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, has described the University of Jos as an enviable centre of learning, which has maintained high standard of academic excellence.
Barr. Mutfwang stated this on Wednesday when the Management of the University, led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ishaya Tanko, paid him a courtesy call at Rayfield, Jos.
He pledged to make the University proud, being the only Alumnus that has the opportunity to govern Plateau at the moment, saying everything possible would be done to change the Plateau narratives to the advantage of citizens.
“I congratulate the University of Jos because despite the odds, the institution has maintained high standard of academic excellence. I am glad that the the Faculty of Law particularly has become a factory that produces Senior Advocates of Nigeria. This is a testimony to the quality of teaching at the faculty” He said.
He encouraged the University to maintained it’s standard of excellence performance, we will look for ways and means of making sure that University education is qualitative because the times and the dynamics are changing. We must not only produce graduates that can only pass examination, but graduates that are relevant and can contribute to finding solutions to challenges that confront our society.
“Let me appeal that the University of Jos should look at itself as a big brother within the University community in the state.There will be great value addition if the University of Jos looks out to improve the Plateau State University, improve the Karl Kum University, and making sure that they grow as centres of excellence.”
Barr. Mutfwang further said, adequate measures would be taken to ensure that the University of Jos becomes a conducive centre for learning, reiterating his commitment to partner with the Institution to move Plateau forward on all fronts, thereby addressing the falling standard of education in the state.
He described the initiative conceived by the University Management to remember the founding fathers of the Institution as novel and thoughtful, saying that will inspire other citizens to put forward their wealth of experience in the service of Plateau and Nigeria.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ishaya Tanko, who led the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Prof. Rahila Gowon, Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), the Registrar, Dr. Rejoice Songden, and the SUG President, Longmun Josiah Dakon, among others, congratulated the Governor-Elect on his well deserved victory at the poll.
“We are here to show our happiness and to congratulate you over your well deserved victory that has got you to become the Governor-Elect, Plateau State.”
Prof. Tanko recalled that the University partners with the Voice of America to organize a debate for Governorship Candidates in the state where he made it clear that the institution is looking forward to a Governor that will continue to partner with the University for the overall development of the state.
He explained that the University has a Centre of Excellence in food security and Centre of Peace and Conflict Studies among others, where deliberate efforts are being taken to provide practical solutions to contemporary challenges that confront the state.
He therefore appealed to the Governor-Elect to look into the issues of insecurity affecting the University community, land encroachment, dualization of Bauchi road for free flow of traffic, and create a conducive learning atmosphere for students in the institution for better academic output when sworn-in on May 29, 2023.
Also, the President of the Student Union Government (SUG), Comrade Longmun Josiah Dakon, appealed to Barr. Caleb Mutfwang to look into the issues of insecurity ravaging the University community and solicited for public private partnership to build hostels for indigent students.
