‎Security operatives in close collaboration with the management of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, have arrested a 400-Level student over alleged attempted forced cult initiation, physical assault, and threats to life.

‎The suspect, Mr Adejo Elisha Ojonimi, 25, of the Department of Economics with Matriculation Number 23EC1103, was apprehended on Friday, June 29, 2026 by the University Vigilante Service. The arrest followed a formal complaint by a spill-over student from the Department of Food Science and Technology.

‎According to the complainant, Ojonimi, who resides at NTA area behind the campus, approached him and demanded that he join a group he identified as the ‘Black Axe Confraternity’.

‎The student alleged that after he refused, he was physically assaulted, injured, and repeatedly threatened with severe consequences if he failed to submit to initiation.

‎“Out of fear for my safety, I abandoned my residence and remained in hiding for several days before reporting the matter,” the complainant stated.

‎Preliminary investigation by the University’s Security Unit revealed visible physical injuries on the complainant at the time the report was made. During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted to aspects of the assault and threats.

‎Further checks on the suspect’s mobile phone uncovered conversations with other suspected members of a cult group, using the slogan ‘Egede’, which is associated with the Black Axe Confraternity. Information relating to other individuals allegedly connected to the group has been extracted and documented for further security and administrative action.

‎The suspect has since been handed over to the appropriate security agency for further investigation and possible prosecution.

‎The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman, commended the vigilance and professionalism displayed by the security operatives and stakeholders involved in the operation.

‎He reiterated the institution’s zero-tolerance policy towards cultism, violence, and all forms of criminal activity within and around the campus.

‎“Let this serve as a strong warning to students and anyone involved in cult-related activities: steer clear of Prince Abubakar Audu University. We remain committed to providing a safe, peaceful, and conducive environment for teaching, learning, research, and community service,” Usman warned.

‎With the second semester examinations ongoing, the Vice-Chancellor urged members of the university community to promptly report any suspicious activities or movements that violate the recently released management security guidelines.

‎He assured that all reports would be treated with utmost confidentiality and seriousness.
