The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has reinstated the Labour Party, LP, candidate on the list of contenders for the Enugu North Senatorial by-election scheduled for June 20, 2026.
The development comes days after the Nenadi Usman-led leadership of the party dragged INEC to the Federal High Court in Abuja over alleged “wrongful exclusion” of its candidate from the poll.
In a statement released weekend l, LP spokesperson, Ken Asogwa, said the Commission has rectified the omission following engagements with the party’s leadership.
“The Labour Party wishes to commend the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for correcting the earlier omission of the party and its candidate from the list of contestants for the forthcoming Enugu North Senatorial District by-election scheduled for June 20, 2026
“However, following engagements with the leadership of the Commission, the oversight has now been rectified, and the Labour Party and its candidate have been appropriately included in the election,” he stated.
Asogwa said the party has directed its legal team to withdraw the suit filed at the Abuja court.
“The party’s legal team will withdraw the suit on Monday when the hearing resumes at the Abuja court,” he said.
The spokesperson said the Labour Party is fully prepared to participate in the by-election and provide the people of Enugu North with “credible and people-oriented representation” in the remaining part of the 10th Senate.
He also expressed the party’s confidence in INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, and his commitment to fairness, justice, and due process.
“By ensuring that the right thing was done, the Commission has demonstrated responsiveness and reinforced public confidence in the electoral process,” Asogwa said.
The LP also commended its supporters, members, and well-wishers who showed concern over its status in the forthcoming poll.
“Your vigilance, commitment, and unwavering faith in the Party remain invaluable,” the party said.
