A correspondent with the Daily Newscraft in Jos, Plateau State, Yakubu Wuyep, has narrated how he narrowly escaped death after a herdsman attacked him on his farm at Agingi, close to the Dutse Kura Cemetery Road in Bassa Local Government Area on Friday, September 11, 2026.

The incident occurred at about 12:00 p.m. According to Wuyep, the herdsman forcefully drove his cattle onto the farm to graze.

Wuyep, who was working on the plot close to the Agingi burial grounds, said he was shocked by the attack. He noted that this was not the first time herders had invaded farms in the area, destroying crops belonging to him and his neighbours.

“Just last week, my neighbour’s farmland was affected. On that fateful day, when the suspected herdsman invaded again, residents fled in different directions. We have been living in fear because we want to co-exist peacefully with them,” he said.

The visibly traumatized journalist said he escaped an assault with stones and a knife attack by a whisker. He added that he reported the matter to a nearby security outfit.

“My farm was overrun by the herder. He brought out a knife and ran to attack me. I managed to escape and he later ran into the nearby bushes,” Wuyep narrated.

He further alleged that for some time now, he has been embroiled in heated confrontations with Fulani herdsmen who regularly pull down the fence around his farmland and force their cattle to graze there.

“This does not apply to me alone. These herdsmen freely graze and destroy cash crops belonging to resident farmers. There have also been recent reports of killings and rape of women, mostly residents of Agingi in Bassa LGA,” he added.

Wuyep called on the Bassa LGA Chairman, Dr. Joshua Sunday Riti, and Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, to take decisive steps to address the alleged excesses of herdsmen.

“It is worrisome that fresh attacks on farmers by some Fulani herdsmen are looming. Several lives have been lost, houses and farmlands worth millions of naira destroyed or burned down,” he said.

“The herders openly graze on people’s farmlands. As rural dwellers, we appeal to government to do something to stem this ugly tide,” he added.

Wuyep urged the Plateau State Government to live up to its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property and to find lasting solutions to the incessant attacks by herdsmen.

He noted that the persistent attacks on farmers have, in no small measure, deprived the country of its primary source of income.
