Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress, APC, and defected to the People’s Redemption Party, PRP.
Buba, who is also seeking the Bauchi State governorship in the 2027 election, announced his defection on Monday.
The former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Security and Intelligence said his decision followed a breakdown of internal democracy in the APC.
He listed lack of fairness, marginalisation of genuine party members, and disregard for grassroots opinions as key reasons for leaving the ruling party.
“My decision to resign from the APC was not taken lightly,” Buba stated.
“It came after extensive consultations with political associates, youths, women groups, party stakeholders, and supporters across Bauchi South and the state at large.”
According to him, the consultations revealed widespread concerns about the direction of the APC in Bauchi State.
Buba said the PRP remains a platform built on justice, transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and people-oriented leadership.
He described the PRP as a party committed to democratic values enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The lawmaker said his movement to the PRP is aimed at strengthening democratic governance and protecting the interests of the common man.
He added that the shift is also intended to provide effective and responsive representation for the people of Bauchi South.
“The time has come for patriotic leaders to unite and rescue the country from poverty, unemployment, insecurity, economic hardship, and poor governance,” Buba declared.
He stressed that Nigeria needs leadership that is accountable to the people and responsive to their needs.
The senator called on his supporters, political allies, and well-wishers to join him in the PRP.
Buba said the collective struggle should focus on good governance, social justice, accountability, and sustainable development across Bauchi State.
His defection adds to the ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
PRP leaders in Bauchi are expected to formally receive the senator and his supporters in the coming days.
