‎Unity Cup: Zimbabwe talk tough ahead Nigeria clash

    Published on

‎Zimbabwe coach, Kaitano Tembo, and midfielder, Marshall Munetsi, have declared that their side are fired up and ready to confront the Super Eagles when both teams meet in the opening semi-final of the 2026 Unity Cup in London tomorrow (Tuesday), May 26.

‎The Warriors will face Nigeria at The Valley Stadium in Charlton, where defending champions Super Eagles will open their campaign to retain the trophy they won at last year’s edition.

‎Speaking in an interview with the Zimbabwe Football Association, Munetsi said the match is one his group have been eagerly anticipating.

‎“We have some big games coming up, the first one is against Nigeria, which everyone is looking forward to.

‎“We have some new guys coming in, some fresh faces. It’s a good opportunity for us to know each other. Obviously, these two games are important, but the one we are looking forward to is the AFCON qualifiers that are coming up.

‎“We know how much these matches mean to the fans, especially Zimbabweans here in the UK. We appreciate their support, and we want to give them something to be proud of,” the 29-year-old said.

‎Tembo also struck an optimistic tone about preparations, saying the camp had started positively.

‎“We are happy with how camp has started. The players who have reported are in good spirits and eager to get to work.

‎“The focus now is on preparing well, building cohesion and ensuring we are ready to represent Zimbabwe positively at the Unity Cup. Every training session matters, and the players understand the responsibility that comes with wearing the national jersey,” the 55-year-old said.

‎Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle, has named a 27-man squad for the tournament, handing first invitations to several players, including Femi Azeez, Arthur Okonkwo, and Owen Oseni.

‎The second semi-final will see India take on Jamaica, with the two winners meeting in the final on May 30.
