Peter Obi Never Requested Amaechi’s Withdrawal – Media Office

    Published on

The media office of Peter Obi has denied reports that the former Anambra State governor asked Rotimi Amaechi to step down for him ahead of the 2027 presidential race.

In a statement signed by Ibrahim Umar, the Obi Media Office said the meeting was part of ongoing consultations with key stakeholders within the African Democratic Congress.

“Typical of Obi, he accords due respect to everyone, Amaechi inclusive. The visit was intended to achieve cooperation within the party,” the statement read.

The media office dismissed claims that Obi pleaded with Amaechi to withdraw from the race.

“At no time during the interaction did Obi beg Amaechi to step down for him. Obi informed Amaechi that he was running for the ADC ticket and asked for his support,” Umar said.

He added that Amaechi also made his position clear during the meeting.

“Amaechi also told Obi that he was in the race for the party’s ticket. They agreed to work together in the interest of the party and the nation,” the statement noted.

The clarification comes amid heightened political consultations following the national convention of the ADC, led by David Mark.

Both Obi and Amaechi are among the key contenders for the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
