Obi pledges review of military welfare, denies pay rejection call

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, Mr. Peter Obi, has advocated improved welfare for serving and retired military personnel.

Obi, in a message marking the burial of Lt.-Gen. Isaac Obiakor (rtd) in Awka, Anambra, weekend, said the nation’s gratitude to its defenders must go beyond tributes.

He described the week as painful for the Army and the country, citing the death of soldiers in an aircraft crash, another helicopter crash, and the demise of Gen. Obiakor.

Obi said retired officers deserve prompt pensions, healthcare, decent housing and support to live in dignity, adding that their families should be assured their sacrifices are not forgotten.

For serving personnel, he called for adequate equipment, proper training and effective medical care.

“Patriotism must go beyond ceremonies and tributes. It must be reflected in the practical care we provide for those who serve and those who have served,” he said.

He prayed for the peaceful repose of Gen. Obiakor and for protection for troops in service, while consoling families who lost loved ones in the line of duty.
