In the face of an unspeakable tragedy—the untimely deaths of two young siblings at General Hospital, Zuru—Governor Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, has once again shown the hallmark of responsible and responsive governance: swift, transparent, and uncompromising action.
The sad incident, reportedly linked to allegations of a wrongful injection, has shaken the conscience of every caring citizen in Kebbi State and beyond. Yet, rather than allowing grief to fester into suspicion or delay justice with inaction, the Governor moved immediately to constitute a high-powered special committee. This is not the usual bureaucratic sidestep; it is decisive leadership that puts accountability first.
Chaired by the Honorable Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed BK, and including key figures such as the Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Sama’ila Augie, the Commissioner for Establishment, Alhaji Manu Dogondaji, and supported by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Zaki Abubakar Zaki as Secretary, the committee brings together experienced administrators with direct oversight of health services and public accountability. Their terms of reference are clear, thorough, and forward-looking:
– To meticulously investigate both the remote and immediate causes of the deaths.
– To identify everyone directly or indirectly involved.
– To carefully examine the allegations of a wrongful injection.
– To apportion blame where it is deserved.
– To propose concrete recommendations that will prevent any recurrence.
By granting the committee just one week to deliver its report and directing them to commence work without delay, Governor Idris has injected urgency into the process. This timeline reflects a government that refuses to let tragedy linger in uncertainty. It signals to the people of Kebbi—and especially to the grieving family—that justice and truth will not be postponed.
Under Governor Nasir Idris’s administration, Kebbi has consistently prioritized the welfare of its citizens. From bolstering nutrition programs that have saved countless children from malnutrition, to strengthening healthcare infrastructure across the state, his government has shown a genuine commitment to building a healthier, safer Kebbi. This latest move reinforces that commitment: when lives are lost within the public health system, the response is not defensiveness, but determination to root out any failing and strengthen the system for the future.
The people of Kebbi can take confidence in this approach. A government that acts this promptly, with senior officials at the helm and a clear mandate for truth and reform, is a government worthy of trust. The committee’s work will not only bring closure to this painful chapter but will help elevate standards of care in our hospitals, ensuring that every child, every family, receives the safe and competent treatment they deserve.
Governor Nasir Idris has set the standard once more. In moments of crisis, true leaders do not hide behind excuses—they confront the issue head-on, demand answers, and drive change. Kebbi is fortunate to have such leadership at this critical time.
We stand with the bereaved family in their sorrow. We commend the Governor for his prompt and principled response. And we look forward to the committee’s findings paving the way for a stronger, more accountable healthcare system that honors the memory of those two precious children by protecting every life that follows.
