Members of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have received the documents for their promised houses and national honours from the Federal Government, fulfilling a commitment made to the team following their historic achievements on the international stage.
The presentation ceremony took place in Lyon, France, where the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, alongside the Director General of the commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, formally handed over the documents to the players and officials.
The gesture is part of the Federal Government’s pledge to reward the team for their outstanding performances and consistent dominance in African women’s basketball.
Speaking during the presentation, Dikko described the moment as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to recognising and rewarding excellence in Nigerian sports.
He praised the team for their dedication, discipline, and patriotism, noting that their achievements have brought pride and global recognition to the country.
According to him, the fulfilment of the promises shows that the government values the sacrifices of Nigerian athletes and remains determined to motivate them to continue excelling on the global stage.
Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, also commended the players and coaching crew for their resilience and professionalism.
He noted that D’Tigress have become a symbol of inspiration for young athletes across Nigeria, particularly girls aspiring to build careers in basketball.
Olopade added that the Federal Government will continue to prioritise the welfare of athletes and ensure that those who bring honour to the nation are adequately rewarded.
Members of the team expressed appreciation to the government for keeping its word, describing the gesture as both encouraging and motivating.
Over the years, D’Tigress have established themselves as the dominant force in African women’s basketball, winning multiple titles at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket and representing Nigeria with distinction on the global stage.
Their performances have also earned them qualification and participation at major global competitions organised by the International Basketball Federation, further cementing Nigeria’s reputation in women’s basketball.
The presentation in Lyon serves as a symbolic recognition of the team’s contribution to Nigerian sports and underscores the Federal Government’s resolve to celebrate athletes who achieve greatness for the nation.
